Summer is just around the corner, and, for many of us, that means long days, fun weekends spent outside, and the occasional getaway.  Maybe you have a Memorial Day barbecue planned for next weekend to kick off the season of relaxation.  I’m looking forward to a nice hike on Vermont’s Long Trail.  But before you settle into the warm days of summer, take a moment to check out a few of our new festival videos.  Of course, the best way to experience the culture of Ghana or the choral traditions of Puerto Rico is by traveling to these unique destinations, but our videos will give you a glimpse of the diversity found in such regions of the world.  If summer’s heat starts to get you down, you can always take a minute to imagine yourself in Austria on a snowy day while watching our Vienna Advent Sing video.  My personal favorite is the African Choral Festival video, but I’ll let you decide for yourself.

Last month I had the honor of escorting the American Youth Harp Ensemble and the Virginia Choristers to the Charleston International Festival of Choirs. The ensemble’s director, Mrs. Lynnelle Ediger, is an absolute gem! Lynnelle formed the Harp Ensemble over a decade ago, and while the choral group is much newer, both continue to impress and surprise audiences with each performance.  Both ensembles performed wonderfully as individual groups, but the real highlights were their joint pieces. Listening to young children sing while accompanied by the youth harp ensemble was one of the most breathtaking and amazing performances I have had the privilege of attending. During their packed-house concert on Friday night and their lively performance at St. Matthew’s Church on Saturday afternoon, audience members were left in awe.

This great  article explains how the Menlo School French students had a week of cultural exchange on the island of Guadeloupe over the Easter vacation. The students started their visit with a workshop on the local drum called the Ka. They visited the workshop of local artisans to learn about how the traditional drums are made and also their cultural & historical significance. They were also able to spend a day with students from a local high school specializing in tourism studies. The local students arranged activities for the Menlo students, including a workshop on two local writers from the island.

The tour ended with a wonderful party at the beach side hotel where the local students and Menlo students enjoyed dancing and time to make friends. The experience was special for all involved.

The Savannah Children's Choir traveled with us just a few weeks ago to Verona. They had the time of their lives! Read this great article about their tour published in their local paper.

My favorite part: “We did a friendship concert in this tiny little town, San Pietro di Lavagne,” says Sullivan. “The kids were so gracious, hanging out with the townspeople and two other adult choirs. They didn’t speak the same language, but they tried out their Italian and then in a blink got up and sang a song with the adults.”
