Salzburg is a city known the world over for its music. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born here in 1756, and many great masters of the Classical Era lived and worked here as well.  Earlier this month, the Ebony Chorale from West Palm Beach, Florida, traveled to Salzburg to add its rich voices to the city’s vibrant mix.  Under the leadership of Dr Orville Lawton, the Chorale came to Salzburg to participate in this year’s summer Cantus Salisburgensis festival, which celebrated its 9th anniversary this year.  Each spring and summer, music ensembles from around the world gather in Salzburg for this exciting festival to perform in a massed concert as well as individual performances.  Major venues are Salzburg Cathedral and the Mozarteum’s Golden Hall, as well as Mirabell Garden (the park known to Sound of Music fans).

The Ebony Chorale was founded in 1992 by Dr Lawton, who recently retired as Dean of Music and Director of Keyboard Studies at the Alexander...

Three lions sleep in the middle of the road and hyenas snack on a Zebra along the side of the road, while I peer down from the Jeep with my camera.  It seems like another world or maybe just a scene from “Mutual of Omaha Wild Kingdom” but it is real in the Serengeti in Tanzania. Masai villagers walk 30 miles a day to bring their cattle to water across the same plains where those lions sleep and the Hyena eats… how can anyone manage that? The variety of life on this planet is marvelous.

My mind expands as I walk among the Tanzanians during rush hour in Arusha. Farmers lay out their fresh produce on sheets to sell to the commuters who parade by on foot and on bikes. Public buses, in the form of mini-vans, wind though the masses of people will colorfully dresses people just barely holding on to a door handle as they sit five to a three-person row! Children beam up at me and my very white skin with curiosity and interest. Everyone seems to be relaxed in the pressing crowds and I...

During the Charleston International Festival of Choirs we set up a web site where family and friends could follow the daily events. Below are excerpts from that daily blog which we hope will bring light to the wonderful events that took place during the festival. Many Voices Become One

As choirs arrived on Thursday afternoon at the Francis Marion hotel for the opening ceremony of the choral festival, guests at the hotel wondered at the stream of 300 singers filling the ball room. Dr. André Thomas wasted no time when appetizers and speeches were done in getting all 300 voices to begin to come together as one choir.
With ages ranging from 13 to 74 and hailing from as far apart as Germany and North Carolina the common thread of music brought everyone together.
After two hours of guidance from Dr Thomas the choirs had already sung through all their concert pieces and were beginning to dig more deeply into each piece. Later some choirs went back to their hotel for...
